Now used as two separate shop units No. 46 River Trees and No. 47 House
of Wines. The building stands on the corner of Steep Hill and Christ's
Hospital Terrace. The architectural evidence suggests it was built 1170
- 1180, which ties in with the original thought that it was 'Aaron The
Jew's House'. Aaron the Jew who lived in Lincoln 1166 - 1186 was very
rich and owned property all over the country, however there is no documented
proof that connects the two together. In fact it is now thought that it
belonged to another Jew, Joceus or Josce of York, who died about 1190,
and that the house was built by him.
Documentary evidence
gives various owners up to 1300 and then little is known of the ownership
until 1851 when according to the Census it was occupied by Edward Stall,
a Butcher. In 1881 it was occupied by Robert Lee, Tailor and Newspaper
seller, since then it has also been an Antique Shop and a Charity Shop.
In 1997 - 98 repairs and conversion took place and House of Wines moved
in to the premises.
